The role of the podiatrist (also know as a chiropodist) is to prevent or correct deformity of the feet and maintain normal mobility and function. Podiatrists provide the basis for the ideal walking style and posture and identify any medical or surgical condition that may require further referral and management. They also relieve pain, treat infections and skin, nail, soft tissue and connective tissue problems. This is done in conjunction with other members of the health care team. Podiatrists can also give expert advice on footwear, so it is a good idea to take a pair of shoes with you when you next see your podiatrist.
The majority of foot problems can be dealt with in a routine 30min appointment. However more specialist treatments often require a longer appointment such as: nail surgery, verruca needling and biomechanical assessments for provision of foot orthoses
Nail Surgery : Nail surgery is a minor surgical procedure which generally involves permanently removing a section of nail which is causing pain or an ingrown toenail.
Falknor's Verruca Needling: is an innovative procedure used to treat stubborn verruca is adults. The procedure is performed under a local anaesthetic and involves puncturing the lesions multiple times to cause a controlled inflammatory response which, in turn, stimulates the body’s immune system to recognise the virus and destroy it.
Biomechanical Assessments: Biomechanics is concerned with preservation, restoration and development of the function of the foot and its associated structure. Biomechanics refers to an understanding of the mechanics in the body and podiatrists use this to diagnose and treat the lower limb aches and pains. If you book a biomechanical assessment please bring any sports shoes to your appointment and a pair of shorts as you may need to change into these for assessment.
